Two Questions

I promise shortly to blog about the Roommate = Batman theory, as well as telling you all of the wacky misadventures of Spousal Hire and the Lecture from Hell. But for now, two quick questions for the more knowledgeable out there.

1. What are your favorite places to take your parents when they come to Madison? Both for dining, and for entertainment, of course. My folks are coming in October, and I'm contemplating things they might enjoy.

2. Anyone have any recommendations for a good laptop? First and foremost, I'm not buying a mac. So don't suggest it. My folks want to get me one for Christmas, and they're contemplating the Dell Inspiron 1720 (my dad gets a discount on Dell computers through his work), so I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts, as others are tech-savvy and I am not.

Thanks, and more enjoyable posts forthcoming.

1. Farmers Market - but my parents like that sort of thing. We are hicks from the sticks.

2. I love my Dell. I have a tiny one - 12.1" screen - and it is wonderfully light weight. Another nice thing about the Dell is that you can customize what you want on it, how much power you want, amount of memory, etc. It can be basic or totally tricked out.

** I was thinking about the House of 7 Gables issue, and decided that you should be happy that she didn't choose Anne of Green Gables (although, Anne does talk about the Romantic poets a lot).

1. Lao Laan-Xang if they like Thai. Harvest if they're paying. All those brunch places around the Square (in which case you can catch the Farmer's Market too). Yummy Chinese at China Palace on Sherman.

2) Buy a Mac. I cannot in good conscious tell you otherwise.

And, please, more details about SH/LFH.

The only place in Madison my parents were noticeably impressed with was Sardines. I highly recommend it. UW faculty also seem to like it.

Dan's parents have enjoyed Lombardino's and the Tornado Room.

I would point out that I've had nothing but trouble with my Dell laptops. I have experience with three of the little bastards (mine, my fiance's, and a replacement for my original) and all of them have had nagging or crippling technical faults at one time or another. Their desktops are top-notch, but their laptops suck goat.

I recommend either Toshiba or an HP. My fiance (you read right) just purchased an HP dvp6500t which she spec'd out magnificently (thanks to my help) for about 1200 bucks. It's a pretty incredible machine.

1. Lombardino's
2. Check out the CNET review here. My sense is that with laptops, at least more so than with desktop,s you really get what you pay for.

First off, thanks Thom for the review. As I'm really just looking for a portable dissertation machine (using my desktop still for games and whatnot), this seems like it'll work ok.

Second, holy shit! First the Wizard and then Dr. Church?! Holy matrimony, Batman!

Also, where do people enjoy getting breakfast (like a decent sit-down breakfast, not a bagel or pastry)? I'm contemplating Monty's, but I haven't been to that many other places. (And sorry Red Headed Stepchild, no greasy diner food.)

Cocoliquot and Bluephies both have really nice brunch (and take reservations, which I guess is mostly only an issue on Sundays, actually).

My FAVORITE breakfast/brunch place is Marigold's (not open on Sunday), though I also like Lazy Jane's (in spite of its awful, awful parking lot).

Also, Dan and I both have Dell laptops that we love and haven't had any problems with. My Toshiba, however, was also great until it hit the five year mark.

lazy jane's is good but overpriced (so a good parent location). it's usually quite crowded on the weekend. so, plan ahead.

the best non-greasy-spoon "diner" has got to be Hubard Ave. out in Middleton. It's just like Monty's (same owner) except better quality, more seating, and fewer customers. They only serve breakfast till 11.

"House of Pancakes" (I think that's the name) is also nice, if you like giant stacks of pancakes of all kinds.

By the by - I've also been cast as Sir Toby in Twelfth Night here at UVA. http://www.virginia.edu/drama/currentseason.htm

Kevin's House of Pancakes is actually called Original Pancake House. And I think there are two b's in hubbard.
